Astro courts, low bounces and acute angles present a challenge

Thursday 27 May saw our mixed doubles Ipswich summer league team play their first match at YM Tennis Club, based at Copleston High School in Ipswich.

The evening weather was fine, for a change, and the opposition as always were friendly and welcoming.

Congratulations to Mags and Roger C who managed to win two sets, one of them being 9-8 to Sax, so awfully close. Mags said it was difficult as it always takes at least a set to get used to the surface!

YM play on an Astro court and this gives an exceptionally low bounce and when the ball hits the lines it inevitable skids off at an acute angle. Typically, YM play a phenomenal number of sliced shots which love this surface. They have a home advantage! Astro courts are normally good to play on, like at Ipswich Sports Club, but their surface seems to be a little different.

Commiserations to Lisa and Ewan who were pipped to the post twice by losing 9-7; the sets could have gone either way so they were very unlucky.

We lost the match 6-3 but to be fair YM are always tough opponents, and it will be interesting to see how they cope with our courts, one hopes to secure a win on home territory.

We don't have long to wait as our next mixed match is home to YM on Wednesday 9 June.

Many thanks to all that played: Mags, Roger C, Lisa, Ewan, Fran, and Martin for playing in his first mixed match for Sax.
