As the full moon shone over Saxmundham on Monday 6th October, the inaugural match of the Ipswich & District Ladies Winter League – also known as the floodlit league – got underway, writes Jo Davies.

The league format is two pairs per team, playing two sets against each pair. After a long drive, the friendly Wortham team got on court, and we soon warmed up, beating away the cool autumn air.

As a duo team captain Jennie, and partner Jo, didn’t hold back in moving forwards, taking control of some good rallies, clinching the first set 6-2 then the second 6-0. This was largely thanks to Jennie’s signature speed and agility on court, complemented by her thundering baseline shots up the tramlines.

Jo, meanwhile, got her protractor out, killing off some tricky net shots (partly out of impatience!) plus she managed a few speedy shots straight down the middle and a few tricksy serves.

Over on the other court, star player Fran stepped in at late notice to join team-mate Barbara. The skilful, consistent duo created something of a hotpotch scoreline in the first two sets, grabbing the first convincingly at 6-2, but letting go of the second, 2-6.

Cheeringly, Fran left the court saying: “That was FUN!”

The next two sets played out in a similar fashion as the first two did for Jennie and Jo, with some very thrilling rallies against two skilled Wortham players. Really super match-play and great spirit on court prevailed, and Jennie and Jo managed to clinch their second two sets 6-3, 6-2.

Fran and Barbara meanwhile, by their own admission, had a peak and a dip, and another peak – and another dip! As viewed from the other court, they played very well together, returning some tricky dropshots with deft backhands, and taking their combined skills and consistency to an enviable level. And, quelle surprise, no tie-breaks for Barbara!  Their final score was a 7-5 win then a 2-6 loss.

Once the scoresheet – the completion of which requires a master’s degree in applied mathematics – was sorted, it was 10pm.

After some tasty bakes courtesy of Jennie and some good conversation, the away team set off towards the A140, and we reflected on a super evening of tennis.

Matches really can be a lot of fun, especially when played in such good spirit; they can challenge your game in new ways, and nurture a team camaraderie that’s second to none – win or lose.
