True Grit: another great performance by our Ladies 2nd team

Applause is always well-deserved for all our match teams

Match report by Ladies 2nd team captain Nicky Wedekind

Sax vs Ipswich (home)

Our team for this match, which took place at home on Friday 27th May, comprised Fiona and Sophia, Fran and Barbara and Shirley and Jennie.

I (Nicky, team captain) was the reserve and got to see the whole match from the sidelines, something I have not done before.

We finally finished at about 22:30, but it was an amazing evening. We lost 6-3 overall, but the grit that we showed to get those three sets against a very experienced Ipswich side was something to behold.

"The grit that we showed to get those three sets against a very experienced Ipswich side was something to behold."

Sophia and Fiona had an incredibly long first set that they won. Fiona executed her familiar and deadly backhands with great flair, and moved fantastically well. Clearly a mistake was made on her birth certificate. Sophia played with real power and accuracy before an injury forced her to retire. We hope that she will be back on the courts soon.

It won't come as a surprise to learn that Fran and Barbara kept us all out of our beds with a tie break. They eventually ran out winners of this set having shown great teamwork all evening.

I want to finish by writing about Jennie and Shirley.

After a rather nervy start, they grew in confidence and played a tie-break in their second set. It was a really tense affair, but THEY WON. Cue applause from the onlookers.

After this set, they played the top Ipswich pair and ran them close. They were terriers and always forced their opponents to play an extra shot. Well done to you two.

A great team performance and a source of great pride to Saxmundham Tennis Club.
