A case of Deja vu at Cromer

Play Your Way to Wimbledon returned again this year with a unique opportunity for players to play at the All England Club courts in July. Competition started at Saxmundham with a few entries for the Men's and Ladies Doubles with winners progressing to Cromer.

Sax's finalists, Ewan and Matt, would return to Cromer for the second year to try and do one better than last year after missing out on the opportunity to play at Wimbledon after losing in a deciding set tie break in the final......

History sadly would repeat itself though with the pair succumbing in the final once more against a very strong pair who served dominately throughout. The final would only be half the story as what will be remembered most would be the journey there in the first place which was pretty entertaining and full of drama.

In the quarter final they would go a set down against a top notch pair from Ely. Second set would go the distance and narrowly won on a tie break 9v7 before heading to a deciding match tie break which just saw the Sax pair through 10v8! Semi final would start disastrously with the first set flying by and very quickly the second set was getting away from the pair. With the pair two breaks down and the pair from East Bergolt serving at 40v15, defeat was the obvious outcome. However two match points came and gone after two amazing rallies and cracking winners from both Matt and Ewan, now at sudden-death deuce they would face yet another match point which again they would scrammble and dig in deep to win. From there it catapulted the pair forwards to end up taking the set on a tie breaker fairly comfortably. Another match tie break followed, and another entertaining (but very stressful) ten minutes of tennis followed with Sax yet again saving a match point before finally coming out 10v8 winners to progress to the final!

As mentioned a very tough final however a great day all in all, topped off with fish and chips on the beach.
