First Match Down!

Match report by Graham Hunter

After a long period of lockdown the Saxmundham Tennis Club Men's 2nd's Doubles team finally played the first Ipswich & District Summer League match on Friday 7 May 2021.

The weather looked promising - and so did our talented team!

Playing at home to Sproughton, each one of our three pairings started off strongly - the plan being to dictate each game and play an attacking strategy . The best laid plans… :)

After a well-matched couple of hours of tennis we conceded defeat 4 sets to 5. In many ways a positive for our first match, in that there’s no shame in losing by just one set, but obviously frustrating as there were chances and opportunities all our players just didn’t quite manage to convert in to the all important win.

Nothing more frustrating than playing opponents whose form appeared weaker than our own, but who still managed to dig deep, keep calm, frustrate us - and ultimately snatch victory!

Lessons learnt for our next match are:

  • to keep up the aggressive strokes from the get-go

  • mix up the shots when under pressure

  • and of course keep that positive mindset

Big shout out to Ian and Richard for securing two good wins and comeback kids Jeremy and myself for putting our second match behind us and getting back on form to win our third set comfortably, 8-1. Pairing two lefties has its advantages!

David and Drew were always applying pressure with their big serving and I’m confident they’ll convert that passion into even more wins next match!
