Name and role
David McGowan, captain of the Saxmundham Men's 3rd team.
Tell us a bit about your involvement with the club
Basically, I'm a member of the men’s team and happy to play for any team including the mixed (but probably not the ladies...)
What first attracted you to playing tennis?
I have always loved playing tennis from when I was at school, but I hadn't really had the chance to play until we moved to Saxmundham. It was great to be able to join as a family and enjoy the outdoors whilst playing a fun game.
Tell us about a few of your tennis successes…
It’s hard to say about the tennis successes, however I have enjoyed some of the doubles match wins that we've had on the road. I've made a load of new friends, had a really good laugh playing, and it has got me out of the house on a cold winter’s night. I think these have been my main tennis successes.
What would you say to anyone who wants to improve their game?
Get Matt Last to give you some training, but the best and easiest way is to play more games either with the social tennis or with joining the men’s or women’s or mixed teams. The more you play, the better you get I think. I've seen this with myself and with all of the players at the club.
What would you say to anyone who’s thinking of playing in league matches?
I think for most it can be daunting, especially if it is your first game (it was for me). You may be worried about the level that you play at, compared with your team and the opposition. However, I wouldn't worry about that, as we all play at different levels and we can soon put you in a team that plays at the same level as you.
The games are played so pleasantly with other Suffolk teams, with both sides complementing each other, and the sportsmanship is so good compared with other sports.
And finally, name three things you love about playing tennis
Exercise, fun and laughter, friendships and teammates.
